Chest-Opening Stretches for Desk and Screen Work

Chest-opening stretches can give your arms and shoulders a different position after typing. Keep the ribs and neck relaxed as you move.

Start with an open-arm reach

Stand with your feet comfortable and slowly open your arms to the sides. Let the shoulder blades move without pulling the shoulders down hard. Take a normal breath, then return the arms forward.

Repeat a few times and notice whether the movement feels easier when the range stays small.

Use a doorway only if it feels stable

Place your forearms lightly on a doorway and step forward a small amount. Keep the stretch mild and your neck relaxed. Do not push your body through the frame or hold the position if your shoulders feel pinched.

A towel or band can offer another option. Use a wide grip and move slowly overhead without forcing the hands behind you.

Follow the stretch with movement

Walk, do wall slides, or change your desk position after the stretch. The NHS recommends changing position regularly, so a chest stretch should be part of a broader movement pattern.

Uncurled includes chest and shoulder work in guided posture sessions that are short enough to repeat.

Stop when the stretch feels sharp

Stop if you feel pain, dizziness, numbness, or unusual discomfort. Ask a qualified healthcare professional for advice if symptoms persist.
