How to Sit on the Floor With Good Posture

Floor sitting has many shapes. Choose one that lets you breathe, shift your weight, and leave the position without discomfort.

Raise the hips if the floor feels restrictive

Sit on a folded blanket, cushion, or firm pillow so your hips are slightly higher than your knees. This can make it easier to keep your torso comfortable without forcing your legs into a deep position.

Choose crossed legs, one leg extended, or another shape that lets you shift. There is no prize for holding the same position for a long time.

Bring the task closer

If you are reading or using a laptop, bring the screen or book toward you. A low object that stays on the floor can pull your head forward, so raise it when the task lasts more than a few minutes.

Support your arms when possible and change position before you feel stuck.

Stand and reset

After sitting on the floor, walk for a minute and move your shoulders. Add a gentle hip stretch only if it feels useful. The NHS recommends changing position regularly and keeping exercise comfortable.

Uncurled can guide a short posture session after floor work. Stop if movement causes pain, dizziness, numbness, or unusual discomfort.
