Reading Posture: Set Up the Book Before Your Neck Slumps

Reading posture is easier to manage when the book comes up toward you. Support your arms, change position, and stop treating one chair angle as permanent.

Raise the page when the session is long

Use a book stand, pillow, or stable surface to bring the book closer to eye level. Support your arms so you do not hold them up the entire time. For a short chapter, your lap may be fine; for an hour, the low angle can pull your head forward.

The setup should let you look down sometimes without keeping your neck there for the whole session.

Change position between sections

Stand up, walk a few steps, or change the chair angle between chapters. If you read on a phone, hold it higher and use larger text when possible. The NHS recommends changing position regularly when neck work becomes uncomfortable.

Use a short reset

Try a few chin tucks and shoulder circles before returning to the page. Uncurled can remind you after a reading block and guide a broader posture session when you want one.

Stop if movement causes pain, dizziness, numbness, or unusual discomfort, and ask a qualified healthcare professional for advice if symptoms persist.
